Summary:
This was one of the highlights of our trip to Java and an absolutely unforgettable experience. Both the blue fire and view from the crater rim were incredible, and even more special due to the unique time of day! Our driver Riko and guide Ekshal were both excellent. Ekshal was good at looking after our family, going at our pace, and was assertive but not pushy in situations when we were trying to get down to see the blue fire in time or trying to get closer to take photos (as there are hundreds of other people all jostling to see it too).
Be aware that it's about 10km hiking all up (unless you get a lift in one of the trolley carts) - 3.5km uphill to the crater rim, about 1km down a very narrow rocky track to the blue fire, 1km back up, another 1km to and from another lookout point on the rim, then 3.5km back down. Due to the steep track up and down, I would only undertake it with a reasonable level of fitness and no major health issues as it would be hard to get out with the crowds if something goes wrong. We took a 10 year old and 13 year old who could both manage the walking easily, but found the sulphur smoke/fumes a bit scary as it stings your eyes if you don't turn away. But they definitely enjoyed the experience too.
Our driver also helped us buy tickets to the Ketapang ferry which we really appreciated.

We had an amazing experience hiking to the Ijen volcano. We didn't fancy going into the crater so we asked if we could leave a little later and just go for sunrise, they were really accommodating and sorted everything out for us. The hike was great, and our tour guide Yadi was fantastic, really nice and interesting guy and spoke great English. We got a perfectly clear morning and the view was incredible. Would highly recommend East Java Paradise Travel, very professional, got back to any messages straight away and made everything really easy for us.

Our tour with East Java Paradise Travel to hike Ijen was nothing short of extraordinary. Our driver Rizal was early to pick us up, accommodating, and very safe. Our guide Yoga was really great, full of energy, and fine with our fast-pace hiking to beat the crowds (ha!). The marvel of this famous volcanic blue flame followed a breathtaking panoramic sunrise view was one of the best travel experiences we’ve had, made easier by the expert coordination of this company.
We even got to meet Yoga’s famous father who is a sulfur miner of over 30 years. This made our excursion even more authentic and memorable. Highly recommend this tour, and this company, to anyone looking to experience the beauty of Ijen!
